Building up its public transport network to be more flexible and effective towards the needs of citizens and visitors, the Council of Thessaloniki Public Transport is planning to add a public 24km long tramline in the city. According to reports, the new line will have 43 stops, five of which will sub-serve to the under-construction Metro route, five terminals, a 45-hectare depot and electrification by overhead cables. The cost of the project rise at 20 to 22 million euros per km, a total of 515.76 million euros, while nearly 172.700 commuters are estimated to be using this new line daily.
A tender is expected to launch by the end of the year for construction to begin by the end of 2016.
