250 prisoners to be released under electronic surveillance

A pilot scheme that will allow the early release of 250 prisoners over the next 18 months provided they wear an electronic ankle bracelet is soon to launch in Greece, as the company awarded the contract to develop the scheme has completed the project. According to Kathimerini, inmates have been told they can apply for being among those 250, while each will be paying 12.50 euros a day for the use of the tag, unless they prove they cannot afford to do so. The program applies only to inmates whose sentences are of up to 10 years.
