Athens Way: The City of Athens’ New App for Parking and Urban Mobility

Developed by the municipal technology company DAEM S.A., the platform brings together parking services, public transport information and mobility tools in a single, user-friendly application. More than 25,000 people have already downloaded it.

Athens Way is more than a replacement for myAthensPass. With a redesigned interface, expanded functionality and a range of new digital services, it offers a more integrated and intelligent mobility experience for both residents and visitors.

According to DAEM Chief Executive Lazaros Karaoulis, the app marks a new chapter in everyday travel across the capital, simplifying journeys while supporting the city’s transition towards a smarter, better organised and more sustainable urban environment. The platform is designed to evolve continuously through the addition of new services and features.

One of its core functions is controlled parking management. Drivers can confirm they are within a designated parking zone, register their vehicle registration number, select a parking duration of between 30 and 180 minutes, view the total cost and activate a parking ticket directly through the app. Payments can be made by bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Users can also receive reminders before their parking session expires, extend parking remotely, store multiple vehicle registrations, pre-purchase parking time and access digital receipts and transaction records.

For the first time, motorists can view real-time availability at the municipal underground car park in Kotzia Square, including the number of available spaces and occupancy levels.

The app also integrates real-time data from OASA, providing access to routes, timetables, estimated arrival times, live vehicle locations, nearby stops and saved favourites.

Additional features include reporting road safety issues, locating electric vehicle charging points, finding ticket sales outlets and municipal car parks, and accessing useful contacts, city announcements, updates, surveys and practical parking guidance.

Parking time can also be purchased through participating physical sales points, including designated kiosks, where drivers can activate, extend or pre-purchase parking by entering their vehicle registration number.

Existing myAthensPass users are transferred automatically to Athens Way, with their profiles, e-wallet balances and parking histories retained. For security reasons, payment card details must be entered again when topping up an account for the first time.

Available free of charge on the App Store and Google Play, Athens Way forms the foundation of a broader digital ecosystem for integrated urban mobility in Athens.

The city’s controlled parking scheme currently covers 11 visitor zones and operates from 09:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays, with no charges on Sundays or public holidays. Vehicles displaying disabled parking permits, as well as electric vehicles, may park free of charge in visitor spaces for up to 180 minutes.

The project is being implemented under Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, “Greece 2.0”, with funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.
