Most visitors focus on the Acropolis, the picturesque Plaka neighborhood and the city’s celebrated museums, often leaving the crystal-clear waters of Athens off their plans. Yet overlooking the chance to enjoy the Aegean Sea while visiting Athens would be a mistake. Surrounded by the sea, the Greek capital is home to a range of stunning beaches located only a short trip from the city center. After spending the day discovering ancient sites and lively streets, there’s no better way to relax and recharge than by heading to one of the finest beaches along the Athenian Riviera featured in this list.

Glyfada
As you drive along the coastal road toward Glyfada, look out for the sign on your right; that’s your signal to turn off and start the search for a parking space nearby. The beach is long and sandy, with patches of smooth pebbles scattered close to the water’s edge. A lifeguard is usually on duty, while straw umbrellas provide shade for beachgoers, though they tend to fill up quickly during busy periods. Sundays are especially vibrant, attracting families, sunbathers and beach vendors selling cold beers, refreshments and, most importantly on a hot day, ice cream. For those seeking a more peaceful atmosphere, continue about 500 meters further along the same road, where another quieter beach offers a more laid-back escape.

Mikro Kavouri
Shortly after passing Voula Beach, follow the sign marked “Kavouri” and turn right. Along this tranquil coastline, you’ll find two sandy beaches on the right-hand side of the Divani Hotel and three more on the left as you look toward the sea. The water is shallow and calm, making it particularly suitable for families with children, while the small coves create a sheltered and relaxing setting. Nearby cafés add to the comfort, with staff often willing to serve coffee or chilled drinks directly to your sunbed. It’s a peaceful seaside spot where the slower pace and soothing sea breeze invite you to truly unwind.

Megalo Kavouri
A popular choice for families with young children, Megalo Kavouri is known for its calm, shallow waters and broad stretch of soft sand, ideal for both sunbathing and leisurely walks by the sea. The beach is surrounded by a vibrant selection of cafés, restaurants and bars, making it an easy place to spend the entire day, from an early swim to an evening meal by the water. Weekends, however, tend to draw large crowds, changing the otherwise relaxed atmosphere. For a quieter and more peaceful experience, visiting on a weekday is highly recommended.

Mavro Lithari
Many visitors are pleasantly surprised to discover that Mavro Lithari remains free to access, offering beautiful white sand and clear turquoise waters without any entrance fee. Despite its idyllic setting, reaching the beach is easier by car or taxi, as public transportation does not stop directly nearby. Still, those who make the trip are rewarded with a calm and scenic seaside retreat, where the sparkling sea and laid-back atmosphere make it easy to lose track of time.

Sounio
Sounio combines a memorable beach escape with a strong sense of history, all set against the dazzling backdrop of the Aegean Sea. Open to the public and free to access, it sits at the southern edge of the Attica peninsula, where the coastline meets the open sea beneath the iconic Temple of Poseidon. Located around 70 kilometers from Athens and just a short walk from the ancient temple, this beach offers a setting unlike any other. From the shore, visitors can admire the temple’s marble columns rising above the landscape, creating a unique blend of natural beauty and Greek heritage. Swimming here feels intertwined with mythology, while the sea breeze carries echoes of the past

Limanakia
A little past Vouliagmeni Beach and directly opposite the lake of the same name lies the first of the three rocky coves collectively known as Limanakia. Each cove has its own distinct atmosphere, yet all are defined by their rugged charm, crystal-clear waters, sunlit rocks and striking cliffs that lead into the sea. The third cove is especially popular with nudists, while the others attract a wider mix of visitors. Although these spots are well-loved, they still manage to feel secluded, particularly if you continue further along the coastline, where smaller hidden corners can be found. The paths down can be steep and uneven, but those who make the descent are rewarded with incredibly clear waters and a swimming experience that feels wonderfully untouched.

KAPE, Legrena
Along the road to Sounio, shortly after the settlement of Harakas and before Legrena, look for the sign marked “KAPE Property”. Turn right, continue briefly along the dirt road and park nearby. From there, one of the Aegean’s hidden treasures comes into view. Visitors arriving for the first time, specially during a quiet weekday, are often amazed that such a stunning and unspoiled beach exists only about an hour from central Athens. The sand is soft, the waters are exceptionally clear and the peaceful surroundings createa sense of complete escape. Just beyond the main beach, to the right, there is also a smaller cove popular with nudists. Since the area remains largely untouched, it’s best to bring everything you may need, as there are no beach bars or shops nearby.

Althea, (Skalakia, Agia Marina), Koropi
Tucked away on the edge of the Municipality of Kropia, just past Varkiza, Althea is a small bay with a distinct island-like charm reminiscent of the Cyclades. A short staircase leads down to the beach, revealing a quiet and relaxing coastal hideaway. With its turquoise waters and rocky landscape, the bay feels wonderfully secluded despite its proximity to Athens. It’s an ideal place for a peaceful swim and a break from the city, though visitors should remember to bring their own essentials, as the beach remains beautifully undeveloped and untouched.

Erotospilia, Porto Rafti
Just one kilometer from Porto Rafti, Erotospilia is a peaceful beach surrounded by rocky formations and shaded by trees nearby. Small caves along the coastline give the area a distinctive and slightly mysterious character. During the week, the beach is usually calm and ideal for those looking to relax in a quieter setting. Alepochori and Psatha, Vilia, Attica
Roughly 60 kilometers west of Athens, on the opposite side of Attica, Alepochori and Psatha are known for their long, spacious beaches where there is always plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the sea. Both beaches include organized areas with sunbeds and umbrellas, offering comfort and convenience for visitors. The waters are cool and refreshing, making them especially enjoyable during the warmer months. For those who manage to find it, the reward is a peaceful, unspoiled setting perfect for unwinding in a calm and undisturbed atmosphere.

Organized beaches

Akti tou Iliou
As the closest organized beach to central Athens, Akti tou Iliou is located in the vibrant area of Alimos, combining easy access with a lively seaside atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a range of facilities, including a water park, numerous cafés, restaurants and a beachwear shop. Entrance fees are kept affordable, with weekday admission at 10 euros and weekend entry at 12 euros. Reduced rates are available for seniors over 65 and children aged 5 to 12, who pay 4 euros. Sunbeds are offered at an additional cost of 6 euros on weekdays and 8 euros on weekends.

Akti Vouliagmeni

Enhanced with the addition of the exclusive Gold Beach area, it can also offer a more premium experience for those seeking extra comfort and services by the sea. Standard admission is 10 euros on weekdays and 15 euros on weekends, with reduced tickets available at 5 euros and 8 euros respectively for eligible visitors. For a more luxurious visit, the Gold Beach area provides elevated access at 50 euros during the week and 70 euros on weekends, offering enhanced amenities and a more exclusive setting.
