Fake marriages on the rise in Greece

Greece is becoming a paradise destination for “fake” weddings, indicate recent reports, with its cities thriving of criminal rings, which take advantage of illegal migrants looking out for ways to obtain a residency permit. According to the reputable “Greek Reporter”, these crime organizations lure unemployed or poor Greek women with 5,000 to 7,000 euros rewards in order to get married to illegal migrants and help them get a green card. The criminal organizations demand a large pay from migrants, a portion of which is given to the brides before the wedding. Once the migrants obtain their green card, the marriage is terminated. Such an operation was uncovered nearly a year ago by the police authorities in Thessaloniki. The organization had arranged 68 weddings, all of which ensured Greek citizenship to foreign women. Greek police found evidence of potentially 79 additional marriage arrangements. Further to this, police investigation also revealed that many migrants arrange deals with Greek brides on their own initiatives, and after the wedding is performed, the so-called couple do not share the same roof or have any romantic relations.
