Greek Central Archaeological Council prohibits Petzl Roctrip in Meteora

The Greek Central Archaeological Council (KAS) said “no” to the international Petzl Roctrip festival, an annual gathering of climbers - more than 1,000 visitors were expected including journalists and spectators - which would take place at the majestic rock formation of Meteora, in Thessaly, central Greece between September 29-October 3. According to statements made at “Kathimerini” newspaper by KAS officials, organizers had failed to provide enough details on the contest’s climbing routes and the festival’s parallel events, denying though that the decision was influenced by opposition to the gathering from the monastic community of Meteora.

The centrist “To Potami” party, stood against KAS decision and two of its members were scheduled to make a “symbolic” climbing at the Meteora rocks. “We have to make use of our land in a way that is beneficial for future generations, without prejudice and red tape getting in the way, but of course, always in respect to the natural beauty and history of the place”, stressed the party in its statement.
