Plans for the implementation of a modern waste management system across the Peloponnese, a region thriving of illegal landfills, was approved by the Ministry of Environment on Tuesday. Delivered by the regional authority of the Peloponnese, the plans provide for the replacement of 26 makeshift dumping spots with a system based on European Union standards and regulations, creating the right conditions for the contract to be signed with Terna Energy, which is to undertake the 160 million euros project.

Despite the protest by residents and conservationists who opposed to such a development, the ministry approved the plans, stressing that they meet the strict specifications and standards of the EU.
