Piraeus to celebrate European Maritime Day

Europe celebrates the European Maritime Day on May 20. Within the context of this annual maritime history and culture celebrations, the port of Piraeus, the country’s largest port, celebrates its maritime community and tradition with a series of events and happenings throughout the city. The Piraeus Conference to be held on May 28, puts the spotlight on the vital role of maritime communities in the future of the Blue economy, with policymakers debating and exchanging best practices with regard to seas and oceans. Ministers, commissioners, CEOs and experts will discuss opportunities and challenges that coasts and seas present and develop new synergies, while a plenary session will introduce the main political challenges of coastal cities and ports. An exhibition to be held on May 28-29 at the Athens Concert Hall, will bring sector professionals and insiders together to share experiences and discuss the latest developments. The celebrative atmosphere will spread around the city with excursions by the sea, live performances and music happenings, marine sports, open sailing days and trips around the coast from May 30 to 31, while local restaurants will be offering special menus with traditional seafood dishes and wine. Visitors will also have the chance to explore Piraeus’ archaeological sites and industrial landmarks. Lectures, maritime industry job fairs, marine documentaries, educational events, photography shows featuring maritime treasures and aiming to raise awareness of the importance of the sea on a local, regional and global scale, enrich the festive spirit.
The events are jointly supported by the European Commission, the Ministry for Economy, Infrastructure, Shipping and Tourism, and the municipality of Piraeus.
