Season's first nest of Caretta caretta spotted in Zakynthos

This season’s first nest of the sea turtle Caretta caretta was spotted in west Secania at Zakynthos, by volunteers of the Organisation “Archelon”. The first hatch is expected in 50-60 days.

Two more attempts had been made by turtles the previous days to reach shore and nest up, on the east side of the beach, but to no avail.

According to the data, 3.456 nests were found last year, which hatched 214.539 baby turtles. The “Archelon” volunteers managed to protect 2.532 nests, leading 148.843 hatchlings back to sea in safety.
