Why Camping Kapsali is the most authentic summer escape in Kythera

Camping Kapsali: The quiet side of summer beneath the pines of Kythera

by Christina Missirli

The moment you arrive in Kythera, it feels as though you’ve stepped into a hidden paradise. Waters in impossible shades of blue, lush landscapes stretching in every direction, a calm energy lingering in the air and a rare sense of authenticity that’s becoming harder and harder to find. Kythera doesn’t rely on excess or mass tourism to enchant you. Instead, it carries a quiet, almost cinematic beauty, the kind that stays with you long after you leave, calling you back again and again.

And if there’s one place that truly captures the soul of the island, it’s Camping Kapsali. After reopening last summer, the campsite returns for its second season on May 29, ready to welcome those searching for a different kind of escape -slower, freer and deeply connected to nature.

The campsite is located in Kapsali, one of the most beautiful and lively corners of Kythera. Nestled among pine trees, with sweeping views of the imposing Venetian castle and the striking islet of Hytra across the water, the setting feels almost unreal, like a secret summer hideaway suspended between sea and sky. Hytra itself, one of the island’s most breathtaking natural landmarks, adds to the dreamlike atmosphere that makes this place so unforgettable.

The beach is only a 6-7 minute walk away and there’s even a small path leading directly from the campsite down to the sea. Cars are not allowed inside the camping grounds, which gives the entire place a noticeably calmer and safer feel. There is public parking available just outside, while the campsite staff can provide special carts to help transport your luggage and camping gear, making it easy to move around comfortably without a car.

What truly sets Camping Kapsali apart, though, is its philosophy. You won’t find swimming pools, extravagant facilities, or curated glamping aesthetics here. Instead, you’ll discover something far more meaningful, the kind of authentic camping experience most of us crave without even realizing it. Shade beneath the pine trees, simple comforts, clean spaces, drinkable water, peaceful silence, nights spent under the stars and that rare feeling of genuinely disconnecting from the noise of everyday life.

At the same time, the campsite offers everything essential for a comfortable and carefree stay. There’s a shared kitchen equipped with electric hobs and a small oven, refrigerators and freezers, clean indoor and outdoor showers and restrooms, free access to laundry facilities, lockers for personal belongings, WiFi and electricity available in the shared reception areas. Everything is designed thoughtfully with simplicity and care without ever losing the raw, genuine spirit that defines the camping experience.

Whether you’re bringing your own tent, staying in one of the campsite’s ready-made setups, or arriving with a camper van, there’s space to settle in comfortably. Most spaces are classic tent pitches and each reservation is designed for up to two adults and one child, helping preserve the relaxed, spacious atmosphere that makes the campsite feel so peaceful. The staff is always happy to share recommendations too, from hidden beaches and local activities to the island’s quieter corners that most visitors never get to see.

And somewhere along the way, you begin to understand why Kythera leaves such a lasting mark on people. Maybe it’s the Semprevives, the tiny yellow flowers scattered across the island, long associated with everlasting love. Maybe it’s the late-night walks when you might come across the island’s elusive zourides, one of Kythera’s most distinctive nocturnal creatures. Or maybe it’s simply that feeling of freedom the island gives you, something impossible to fully put into words, yet impossible to forget once you’ve felt it.

One thing is certain: the moment you leave, you’ll already be wondering when you can come back. And somehow, almost without realizing it, Kythera becomes one of those rare places you carry with you forever, a quiet piece of summer that stays somewhere deep inside you.
