Citizenship to be granted to immigrants over 18 years

Second-generation immigrants living legally in Greece will be eligible for citizenship from the age of 18 provided they have completed certain levels within the Greek education system, according to a new draft bill prepared by the country’s Interior Ministry. As Kathimerini reports, the new law, if approved, will allow second-generation immigrants to apply for citizenship from the age of 16, whether they were born in the country or not. Applicants for citizenship must have either completed the compulsory minimum education (primary and junior high school) or six years in secondary education, or have finished high school and graduated from a Greek university (AEI) or technological educational institute (TEI). There are nearly 200,000 second-generation immigrants in Greece, estimates the Greek Forum of Migrants.
