Athens’ Mayor Yiorgos Kaminis opened the doors of a new apartment block on Tuesday that will house eight families in need, within the context of the City of Athens social housing program. The “House of Hope”, located at Neos Kosmos, has eight fully accommodated apartments, a donation from Procter&Gamble. The families to move in have been already chosen and they are to stay for a period of six months, plus another six if their situation requires. “We do not want to just provide a home for more families but to create the conditions for them to return to normality” said Kaminis who stressed that the municipality’s role would be complete only when the residents at the House of Hope are able to find jobs and earn enough money to rent their own properties. The Neos Kosmos block is the second social housing project carried by the City of Athens. The first, on Bouboulinas Street in downtown Athens, currently houses 50 people.
