Housed in the renovated Stoa of Attalos in the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora, the museum holds archaeological discoveries coming from the systematic excavations of the American School of Classical Studies in the area, dating from the Neolithic to the Post-Byzantine and Ottoman periods. It is organized in chronological and thematic units that reveal aspects of public and private life in ancient Athens. It is a veritable museum on the very history of democracy and is the place where the Treaty of the European Union enlargement was signed in 2003.
