Detention centres for illegal immigrants to be shut down

“We are done with detention centres”, said Alternative Minister for Citizen’s Protection Yiannis Panousis during his visit at the Amygdaleza centre on Saturday, after a Pakistani man’s death. “I am here to express my embarrassment”, the Alternative Minister said vowing to keep the government’s election pledge to shut down migrant detention centres. He noted that the government needs a few days to prepare the legislation and added, “We are going to do what we said before the elections, we are going to do what we said in Parliament”. The 28-year-old Pakistani man hung himself from his bunk bed using a towel. A coroner’s report confirmed that the man had killed himself, Police said. The man had been arrested on December 12 in Rethymno, Crete, for entering Greece illegally. He was moved to Amygdaleza on Friday. He is the fourth migrant to die at the centre since last summer and the second to lose his life there last week, according to activists.
