"Grow Greek Tourism Online" initiative expands to six more destinations

Google’s initiative “Grow Greek Tourism Online” that aims to promote Greek tourism businesses online and help Greece attract more visitors all year round will expand to six more destinations in the country as recently announced during a press conference. According to figures, 51 percent of EU households use the Internet for their travel planning, but in Greece only 10 percent of international tourist arrivals come via the Internet due to poor web presence of the country’s tourism enterprises, reports GTP. The initiative was initially launched last September featuring Crete, where some 650 local tourism businesses had the Google’s support on the use of basic tools to improve their presence in search results and Google Maps and promote potential off season offers. The new entries will now be the Peloponnese, the Cyclades, the Ionian Islands, Macedonia, the Dodecanese and Attica. “An increase in the online activity of the Greek tourism sector throughout the year could increase Greece’s GDP by three percent and generate up to 100,000 new jobs”, explains Dionysis Kolokotsas, the public policy manager of Google Greece. The “Grow Greek Tourism Online” initiative runs in cooperation with the Tourism Ministry, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE).
