Sharing a common vision and claiming for a “livable” city center, Athens’ residents and local community groups are working hand in hand under the “Organizations and Citizens Network for the Historic Centre of Athens” initiative newly launched, to ensure that the historic center of Athens is safe, clean, convivial and ultimately hospitable. “This network was born out of a very specific need, the people’s need to defend their quality of life in an environment that obeys certain rules”, said the renowned travel reporter and Thisseio Residents Association member Maya Tsokli. The initiative provides the grounds for constructive exchange and pursues actions that will improve and safeguard the living standards in the capital’s center. The first steps the network takes are towards ensuring that businesses operating in the city center comply with licenses and operation regulations, among which noise pollution, waste management and parking issues. Also, in an effort to raise awareness, the network has launched the www.istorikokentro.gr web page where interested parties would get informed about ongoing issues affecting Athens communities as well as the network’s “inviting” events, titled “Spring in the Historic Center of Athens”, which include concerts, theater happenings, talks and guided tours.
