A picturesque private museum in the heart of Athens, Herakleidon Museum, founded by Paul and Anna-Belinda Firos, is a striking example of neoclassical architecture. Inspired by Mr. and Mrs. Firos’ commitment to the arts, the museums aims to share this love with the public and in doing so, contribute to the overall artistic life of Athens. The museum not only introduces its visitors to the work of its exhibited artists, but also demonstrates their evolution through several important time periods in his or her career and explains the various techniques used by the artist in order to help the visitors connect to both the artist's life and oeuvre. To accomplish this, works of the artist are accompanied by preparatory sketches, drawings, photographs, personal items and audiovisual and other aids.
There’s always something interesting happening at this small, forward-looking museum. You’ll find everything from kid-friendly replicas of ancient Greek machines to exhibitions by major international artists. A must-see is the large scale, fully functional model of the Antikythera mechanism (one of the oldest computers in the world)—made of acrylic glass so anyone can see how it works. The museum also hosts other events, such as musical performances, literary events, book presentations, seminars, corporate presentations, conferences, and lectures beyond those pertaining to the visual arts.
