Paxoi

A small heaven on earth spread over 25 square km. Paxoi together with its smaller brother Antipaxoi are scenic, cosmopolitan, green, enchanting.

What to see

Paxoi have 2000 lucky inhabitants living there all year (Antipaxoi have 20 even luckier ones). Half of them live in the capital and central port of the island named Gaios or Gais. It is worth visiting the English governοr' s house on the old port dock, the Analipsi church and the Paxoi Museum. Other scenic villages you can stay in are Loggos and Lakka. You should also bathe in the Ozia, Gianna and Glyfada hot springs, rich in sulfur. Pools have been built there ready to heal rheumatic pains and skin problems.

Where to swim

The best way to see all the beaches is to take a boat around the island (you can hire a private boat). Generally speaking the eastern part of the island is inhabited and smooth whereas the west part is steep and you can only access it by boat. On the east go to Gianna, Soulanena, Balos, Agia Marina, Moggonissi, Kloni Gouli, Kamini, Kaki Lagkada, Alati, Kipiadi, Glyfada, and the more secluded Rodovani and Sarakiniko.

Where to stay

Paxos Beach Hotel (+30 32211) and Paxos Club (+30 32450-3) are good choices at Gaios. At Lakka: Amfitriti (+30 30011), Villa Kardia (+30 31951, +30 6979146880) spread over 2500 square mt between cypresses and olive trees, Villa Mpampis (+30 6973099565) 4 minutes from the beach and Lefko Spiti (+30 31454) with a wonderful view of the sea.

Where to eat and drink

Mpiros (+30 31167) tavern at Mpogdanatika is the first stop for food. It is an old coffeehouse transformed into a contemporary space with a 50s ambiance. What you will enjoy here are pure Greek dishes, traditionally cooked on a cool stone paved tereace. Go to Karkaletzos, at Gaio for an excellent mousaka, to Lambis for souvlaki and to Peiratis for fried pasta. Go to Sgarilos, at Lakka, and ask him for his specialty beef sofrito.

You will warm up at the Mouragio and Foinikas bars and go on to the Castello the island's club. In the morning have a freddo at Piou's and at the all day Kalimera on Gaios square. Try the home made ice cream at Skouna.
