High rates of school bullying in Greece

The alarming phenomenon of bullying in schools was in focus of a two-day conference organized by Greek non-profit voluntary Organization “The Smile of the Child” under the auspices of the Greek Presidency of EU Council. According to the socking results following a research in six European countries, among which Greece as well, 1 out of 3 pupils have been experiencing some kind of school bullying and 1 out of 2 have witnessed such incident. As Dan Olvious, professor at Bergen University, Norway, observed, “85-90% of students that are subjected to Internet bullying are also subjected to traditional types of bullying”. Greece is ranked forth in school bullying ratings with a percentage of 31,98%. Lithuania demonstrates 51,65%, followed by Estonia 50,20% and Bulgaria with 34,66%. Latvia rates 25,21% and Italy 15,09%. Nearly 500 cases of school bullying were reported at "The Smile of the Child", last year.
