The abandoned railway lines circling Attica are to serve again, this time as bicycle paths and pedestrian areas according to plans developed by scientists from the National Technical School of Athens in collaboration with the District of Attica. The aspiring project involves the conversion of the lines between the stations of Agioi Anargyroi and Messogia first, to be expanded towards Sounio soon after. The estimated cost of the project reaches the amount of 246,000 euros and it is to be completed by April 2015.
The new bicycle paths and pedestrian areas will also preview their utility for similar developments of other abandoned railway lines in the country.
The project will prove a great asset in promoting sites of interest such as archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, wineries and local settlements, since they will get more accessible to a greater public, commented the outgoing Governor of the District of Attica, Yiannis Sgouros.
