Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and newly-elected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are to meet on the sidelines of the NATO summit at Newport's Celtic Manor in Wales, a meeting that appears crucial for the development of relations between Greece and Turkey. The unofficial meeting was requested, according to reports, by Erdogan, who had recently provoked the Greek government with discomforting statements during his visit to the occupied territories in Northern Cyprus.
“It is not possible for us to reach any agreement that is not based on a two-state solution” had said Erdogan on Monday. “Greece and the Greek Cypriots should demonstrate the same goodwill”, he added.
According to the Cypriot government spokesperson, the Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades had contacted Mr. Samaras on Wednesday, ahead of the meeting in Wales. Their extensive discussion involved the development of talks for the Cypriot dispute. Athens and Nicosia agrees to request that the EU appoints a special representative in order to develop a sustainable solution.
