The Industrial Gas Museum, located in the Technopolis of Athens, reopened its gates to the public in January 2013, approximately 30 years after it closed its operation as a gasworks, supplying the city with light and energy for almost 130 years. Visitors not only have the opportunity to tour the plant’s facilities and observe the coal gas production line but also see industrial heritage and industrial archaeology unfold before their own eyes through original equipment, photographs, audio testimonials and video projections.
Its most recent update introduces 7 more stops along the tour, linked to the 5 senses—stops where the visitors have to participate in order to learn. They can see, smell, feel, hear and even taste industrial history—from the sound of coal-digging and the bell that informed workers when they had to return to work to the touch of coke and the heat inside the retorts, the museum allows for an engaging, entertaining and informative experience.
