Famous Porto Katsiki beach to reopen for public

The beautiful beach of Porto Katsiki in Lefkada is highly possible to be open to the public this summer, with local bodies and scientists joining forces in order to take the appropriate steps against the risk of rocks falling on the beach as it has happened in the past. “We agreed to do a thorough risk analysis of the area to see if the beach will be open to the public this summer season or what additional steps can be taken to significantly reduce the risk”, said Geology professor Efthymios Lekkas, head of the team that arrived in Porto Katsiki to assess the situation. “We also agreed to make some long-term efforts in order to increase the security rate in the region”, he added, stressing however that this project will take years to complete. Asked if there was any possibility for the beach to open to the public over the summer, the professor said that this is possible to a large extent. “I don’t know whether we can afford to open up the whole beach. Our efforts will focus on the safe areas, so tourists can visit the beach”, he explained.
European Space Expo «landed» in Athens
As part of its tour to major European cities, the European Space Expo has currently landed on Syntagma Square in Athens. Visitors are introduced to European space programs, from satellite navigation (Galileo and EGNOS) to Earth observation (Copernicus) in an engaging and entertaining way, which also includes “OmniGlobe”, an interactive hologram of the earth's atmosphere and an impressive model of the Galileo satellite. The exhibition uniquely reveals how European space policy and space-based technologies can benefit our lives on earth, as well as their important role on the European economy and job creation. Space Expo in Athens will run until April 5, with free access to the public.
