In an effort to highlight the role of museums in modern society, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) established 18 May as International Museum Day in 1977. The message of this anniversary is that museums should become agents of cultural exchange “with a view to strengthening education, promoting mutual understanding, peace and cooperation among peoples”. Museums play an important role in the well-being and sustainable development of our societies. As reliable institutions and key connective threads of the social fabric, they have a unique ability to trigger a positive “chain reaction” to promote change in society towards a better tomorrow. Each year, alongside the general message of the celebration, a special theme related to museums and their role in modern society is explored in all ICOM member countries through lectures, exhibitions, meetings and other events.
On the occasion of the International Day of Museums ICOM 2024, this year the Workshop “Museums as a place for the promotion of education and research, the case of the Tériade Museum-Library” was organized at the B&M Theocharakis Foundation on the initiative of the President of the Board of Directors and President of the Development Committee of the World Federation of Friends of Museums (WFFM), Mrs. Lila de Chaves-Chronopoulos, and the Director of the Tériade Museum-Library, Visual and Historical Art, Mr. Konstantinos Maniatopoulos, as well as with the support of the University of the Aegean.

The Museum houses, preserves and displays a collection of priceless works of art and literature, which was created with the contribution of Tériade and includes works spanning from the end of Cubism to the modernism of the 20th century, by artists at the height of their creativity, such as Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, Lorca, Elytis, etc., as well as well-known Greek painters, such as Tsarouchis, Theophilos, etc. At the same time, it collaborates with museums in Greece and France, such as the Matisse Museum and the MUCEM, Museum of the Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean.

Museums play a vital role in society, preserving cultural heritage, promoting education and strengthening social cohesion. They act as custodians of history, preserving works of art for future generations, while providing a tangible link with the past. Through exhibitions and educational programmes, they inspire ambition, encourage critical thinking and facilitate lifelong learning. In these inclusive spaces, different societies 'come together', reflect on their shared experiences and interact in a meaningful way. By acting as a “bridge” between our history and contemporary life, museums can contribute to building a more informed and connected society characterised by understanding and solidarity.
The Workshop “Museums as a place for the promotion of education and research, the case of the Tériade Museum-Library”, provided the opportunity for an interdisciplinary and fruitful dialogue on the necessity of continuous research and cooperation between museums, research institutions and governmental bodies, in order to enhance the social role and contribution of museums through the use of new technologies, in the context of a constantly evolving environment. The Heritage and Museums body, which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, supports, among other things, the cultural activities of the Tériade Museum, with the aim of fostering close cooperation in order to promote the museum's work. In addition, it is in consultation with the Matisse Museum at the Cateau Cambrésis in France with a view to further strengthening cultural contacts.
