Greece would gain further promotion and attract more visitors through the international filming industry and the Greek Tourism Ministry has recently announced its intention to get Greece into more movies. However, major obstacles are yet to bear down in order to “allure” Hollywood with our country’s charms. The high Value Added Tax (VAT), the cost of filming on archaeological sites and the enormous paperwork involved, chase big Hollywood production firms away. According to reports, the production cost for making movies in Greece includes among others, 1,600 euros per day for filming at archaeological sites and museums and 800 euros per day for aerial or underwater filming. Reports also suggest that only the bureaucracy involved is enough reason for producers to seek their background elsewhere.
