Celebrated worldwide for its lacy shores, the Greek island of Milos has been recently renounced “sacred island” for its Early Christian catacombs, a communal burial site, later to be used as a place of worship and a Christian refuge after persecution by the Romans.
“This is a great moment not only for Milos and the Cyclades but for all Greece, as this monument of outstanding historical and religious significance, establishes Milos as a worldwide Pilgrimages Center, enhancing our country’s image as a beacon of international spiritual refulgence”, said Minister of Labour Yiannis Vroutsis who attended the devout ceremonial events on the island presence of Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Ieronymos.
The catacombs of Milos are considered the most important early Christian monument of worship in all of Greece and the third most important of those discovered worldwide, together with the catacombs of Rome and the Holy Land.
