Determined to provide full scale support towards the efforts of Greek Police (EL.AS.) in restraining illegal immigration, the Ministry of Public Order is currently in talks with Israeli firms regarding the acquisition of unmanned aerial vehicles, drones as commonly known, to be used for monitoring the country’s borders, as Kathimerini newspaper recently revealed. The drones will also reinforce battle against organized crime and domestic terrorism. Yet remains unclear how many drones the talks are involving and of what type, in any case, the aircraft once held by the Greek Police authorities will be able to provide useful data including cell phone signals that could help avert crimes and terrorist attacks. Reactivation of surveillance cameras in central Athens is also under consideration as a means to tighten security further.
