Strange cities - Strange itineraries

Within the context of the exhibition «Strange Cities: Athens», the Onassis Foundation and the Onassis Cultural Center are organizing «Strange itineraries», a walking tour on the footsteps of European travelers of the 19th century. Visitors can explore the paths of the romantic travelers and discover aspects of Athens “before” and “after” the Greek struggle against the Ottomans. The smells, the melodies, the costumes, religious practices and customs, elements which in the eyes of foreign travelers made Athens seem a “strange city”, are coming forth through their itineraries and also through engravings and texts to be shown during the guided tours. Lord Byron's romantic poems, James “Athenian” Stuart's images of ancient monuments and memories of the great storyteller Hans Christian Andersen from King’s Otto Athens, will trigger our imagination to reconstruct the topography of the city in the late Ottoman period.
