Diakofto - Kalavrita steam locomotive back on tracks

The original DK 8001 steam locomotive that first operated on the Diakofto-Kalavrita rack railway is running again back on the same tracks. The country’s breathtaking scenery reveals itself gradually through the journey, while visitors are privileged with unique glances into history and time, and an authentic taste of bygone eras.
The steam engine, fully restored and refurbished by the Hellenic Company for Maintenance of Railway Rolling Stock, was delivered to the Hellenic Railway Organization (OSE) on Tuesday, to put it back to its base where it will once again make the route from Diakofto to Kalavrita.
The historic DK 8001 was built by Jean-François Cail and was running the 22 kilometers of the rack railway from Diakofto through the Vouraikos Gorge and the old Mega Spilaion Monastery and up to Kalavryta, stopping en route at Zachlorou. The rack railway was first built under the Harilaos Trikoupis government of 1896.
