The world museum community celebrates the International Museum Day (IMD) today May 18, a unique annual event organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) ever since 1977, aiming to promote museums as vessels of cultural exchange. More than 50 public Museums and nearly 30 archaeological sites throughout Greece participate in this year’s celebrations, featuring special exhibitions, workshops, conferences, lectures, guided tour, educational programs for primary and secondary education students, and many other creative activities, all related to this year’s theme, which is “Museums for a sustainable society”. The theme highlights the significant role of museums as institutions that serve society and its development. On the occasion of the 2015 International Museum Day, the International Council of Museums - Hellenic National Committee is as well honoring Athens’ Industrial Gas Museum. As this year’s “honorary” institution, the Gas Museum will host a series of events that will run until May 24. The opening event will be held on May 18 at the museum at 7pm and includes a museum tour, film screenings and a contemporary music concert.
Admission to all museums, cultural institutions and archaeological sites is free all day.
