Summer on the terrace

The terraces of Athens unveil a whole different, and in many ways fascinating, world that seems totally cut off from the blinded by lights night streets below; But it is not. There is a perfect symmetry with the starry Athenian sky, it only takes a few more stairs and you’ll find yourself sipping cocktails, dancing, falling in love unexpectedly and passionately. Live the city of Athens in all its dimensions, with your feet… way above ground:

Terraces flavored with “Greece”

Not all terraces are the same. Some are leizurly bohemian and carefree. Others offer a refreshing pause, while there are those that promise long hot nights. In some you’ll drink inspired drinks and cocktail, in others you will explore the paths of Greek gastronomy, such as the terrace of the Titania Hotel (52, Panepistimiou Str., 210 3326.000) where you’ll find the Olive Garden Restaurant for some traveling across Greek flavors. The menu designed by the executive chef of the hotel Christos Tziliras, puts the Greek raw materials on the spotlight featuring small delicious miracles. If you are looking for a rooftop with creative Greek cuisine and a breathtaking view of the Temple of Hephaestus and the Acropolis in the distance, then you’ll go up the terrace of Kuzina Restaurant (9, Hadrianos str., Thission, 210 3240.133), listed on the BBC’s top-10 list of restaurants with the best view in the world. Masterful chef Aris Tsanaklidis in its kitchen - a steady recommendation for many years by the Michelin Gogobat Guides for his inspired dishes - suggests a blend of Greek tradition with the latest gastronomy trends. The donuts with feta cheese, pistachios and mushroom sauce is a must-taste dish. You will enjoy the terrace of The Zillers Hotel (Metropolis 54, 210 3222.277) not only for a different and unique version of popular delicacies of traditional Greek cuisine (chef Konstantina Faklaris has done a great job), but for the lavishly “green” surrounding and the view of the Acropolis and the Cathedral in an almost touching distance. Add to that the excellent cocktails.

In recent years, and following the global trend of reclaiming domestic materials, bartenders emphasize more on local spirits and the exploitation of unique Greek herbs, a vision cultivated in its fullest by the Barflies, the team that created this year's list of signature cocktails of Point a. The roof terrace of Hotel Herodion (4, Roberto Galli str., Acropolis, 210 9238.991), has been radically renovated this year to reveal an unrivaled view: the Parthenon, the Lycabettus hill, the Acropolis Museum and the Philopappou Monument unfold their mystique to compose a background most irresistible, especially when the moon pops up on the horizon.

Terraces that love the after hours
Anglais (6 Kirykeiou Street, Monastiraki, 215 5601.192) displays one of the most stunning views of the city as the entire Acropolis neighborhood nests on its feet. Signature cocktails and some intriguing finger food suggestions surrounded by a joyful young crowd wrap the delightful experience up. All it takes is patience for the elevator queue. The turquoise walls, the romantic lanterns and an overwhelming feeling of summer ease off are the key elements of the Big Mouth’s roof (8, Gyftopoulou Grigoriou str., Halandri, 210 6815.505), plus, great music and special events to keep you “alert”, such as, food and cocktails tasting and many more. Summertime in the city and no place feels more “summer-ish” than the legendary terrace of Bios (84, Piraeus str., 210 3425.335). Live gigs, dj sets and amazing cocktails with the Acropolis on the frame.

Traditional “tavernas” on the rooftops
How delightfully the Cretan delicacies fit the Greek summer and this undisputable pairing you’ll experience as you make yourself comfortable on the terrace of Diomataris Tavern (80, Dimofontos str., Petralona, 210 3455.505). Flowers all around the picturesque décor, beautiful music and a mouthwatering collection of Cretan tradition. Make the Turn (25, Rovertou Galli str., Acropolis, 210 9214.130) and the illuminated view of the Herodes Atticus Theatre stands before you like a gigantic card-postal. Some great jazz tunes and the elegant Greek cuisine complement your excitement and… appetite. For meat lovers, the terrace of Kreas taverna (96, Dimofontos str., Ano Petralona, 210 3247.028) is the place to be: special cuts, great quality, and a wood burning Josper oven that produces grilled miracles!
