Limnos with its unique beauties will make up for the long journey there. Small or larger beaches in obvious or hidden places, welcoming locals, very long history. According to mythology this is where Hephaestus landed.
What to see
Myrina is the island's capital and central port. When you first lay eyes on the town you feel smitten by its beauty, its old town houses and the venetian castle at its top since 1186a.d. A walk around the castle hill and you will be amazed by the free roaming deers protected and fed by the local authorities. Take another walk at the venetian port and the Myrina market, wander around the stone paved road at Romeikos Gialos. Limnos has a lot to see, if you like walking. Go from the stone wind mills at Kontia to Sardes, to the old and deserted Pedino, from Kotsina to Repanidi and Kontopouli, from Moudros and Evgatis beach to Panagia Kakkaviotissa at Rema Katsaiti. If you have a car, the island asphalt roads will allow you to go around nice and easy. Go to Avlona for a romantic sunset and to Ifaisteia for the break of dawn. Poliochni is one of the oldest cities in Europe where as at Farakla, Trygies, Fako and Ormos 100 Kefalon you can witness some extraterrestrial artwork!
Where to swim
There are 102 beaches to match all tastes: pebbles or sand, sunny or shady, windy or calm, secluded or busy. If you are looking for umbrellas and sunbeds choose Myrina, also the island's nightlife capital. You can also go to Romeikos Gialos, Nevgatis, Richa Nera while at Platy you will come across the island's touristic side. If you prefer volcanic rocks and turquoise waters go to the famous Thanos beach. If you prefer waterfalls go to Agios Ioannis at Kaspakas. If you are looking for crystal clear coves and sand dunes go to Gomati and Katalakko. Neftina beach is below Cabeirian Monument, Kotsinas and Plaka are at the north, Keros with the Keros Surf Club at Kalliopi is at the south. Fanaraki and Chavouli at Moudros are worth your attention while Petassos and Kalogeros require a boat.
Where to stay
Nefeli's suites (+30 23551) and Lemnos Village (+30 23500) are celebrity magnets. At Porto Myrina (+30 24805-6) you will find parts of the ancient Artemis temple. Varos Village Traditional Hotel (+30 81401, www.varosvillage.com) is situated in the scenic Varos village where they have transformed the old stone houses and flour mills to roomy traditional apartments and suites, fully equipped with all modern life comforts. Their restaurant is equally nice serving traditional Greek cuisine with a twist based on local products. For a lower budget there are Ifaistos (+30 24960, +30 22488), Artemis (24075), Kyma (+30 71333) and Moudros.
Where to eat and drink
Bougatsa for breakfast at Naftilos, at Kontia for hot buns from Chryssafis' bakery. The local cuisine features many delicacies and exceptional local products. Go to Mantella at Sardes and order local pasta, cock with flomaria and rabbit stew. Fish and grilled meats at Kosmos and Koralli at Moudros and Mesogeios at Romeikos Gialos. Clubbing at Karnagio and drinks at Karagiozi. Make sure you try the local cheeses at Chryssafi's (kalathaki, melichloro and kaskavali), the desserts samsades and venizelika and the local wines, before leaving.
