Hellenic coast guard intensifies controls against people-smuggling rackets

The Hellenic Coast Guard intensifies its control operations against people-smuggling rackets in the Aegean in fear of a larger influx of migrants from neighbouring Turkey to be expected during the summer. Greek coast guard authorities also seek for a closer cooperation with their Turkish equivalent, often accused of failing to honour a bilateral repatriation treaty with Greece.

At the same time, authorities on Lesvos are planning to open a second reception centre since a larger number of migrants from Syria and other strife-torn countries should be expected in the upcoming months.
